If you already have an IKEA METOD kitchen, you don't need to start again to change how it looks. The cabinets, hinges and drawers can stay; the fronts and panels are what change. Because our METOD range uses IKEA's own sizes and drilling, a makeover is mostly a matter of ordering the right sizes and swapping them over.
What stays and what changes?
Stays: the METOD cabinets, IKEA's hinges, the drawers and runners, shelves and internal fittings, and usually the benchtop.
Changes: doors, drawer fronts, cover panels, filler panels and plinths, plus handles if you want new ones. Our METOD doors and drawer fronts come drilled to IKEA's pattern, so they suit the IKEA hinges and drawers already in your kitchen.
Step 1: List the sizes you have
METOD fronts are named by cabinet size, and the door is typically 3 mm smaller each way: a 60 × 80 door measures 597 × 797 mm. If you still have your original IKEA plan or receipt, it lists every size. If not, measure the back of each door and drawer front in millimetres and match it to the nearest standard size. Our guide to measuring for kitchen doors walks through it.
Step 2: See the new look on your kitchen
If your kitchen was designed in IKEA's online Kitchen Planner and you still have the saved design, paste its link into the 3D Kitchen Planner. It rebuilds your kitchen in 3D with our doors on it, so you can try profiles, colours and two-tone combinations on the actual layout, with the price updating as you go.
If you have the plan as a PDF instead, the Instant Quote tool reads it and matches every door, drawer front and panel to one of ours.
Step 3: Don't forget the panels and plinth
New doors next to old end panels and an old plinth will look like a partial job. Order the visible panels and plinths in the same finish:
- Cover panels for exposed cabinet sides. Ours are made larger than IKEA's so your installer can trim them to the wall and floor.
- Filler panels for the gaps at walls and ceilings.
- Plinths (kickboards), 240 cm long in 8 or 15 cm heights.
They are all in our METOD panels and plinths range.
Step 4: Choose the finish, then sample it
Painted (2Pac) doors come in any Dulux, Taubmans or Porters colour; there are also woodgrain laminates, NAVURBAN™, Laminex and Polytec. Order an 80 × 160 mm finish sample to check the colour in your own light; its value comes back as a discount code on a joinery order of $1,000 or more. Our finishes comparison helps narrow it down.
Step 5: Order, then swap
Fronts are made to order, typically in 4 to 6 weeks. When they arrive, the old doors come off their hinges and the new ones go on the same IKEA hinges; drawer fronts are swapped on the existing drawers; and handle holes are drilled on site. Most people use an installer for this, and we keep a list of recommended installers.
What does a METOD makeover cost?
It depends on how many fronts you have and the finish. As a guide, a painted 60 × 80 cm METOD door is $285 in Plain and $335 in Shaker, as priced in October 2026. Browse every size in our IKEA METOD range, or let the planner or Instant Quote add it up for you.
