A door that is a few millimetres out is a door that doesn't close properly. How you measure depends on whether you are ordering a standard size for IKEA or Bunnings cabinets, or a custom size for anything else. This guide covers both, using the rules from our own measuring guide.
Standard IKEA and Bunnings sizes: order by the cabinet size
If your cabinets are IKEA METOD, PAX or BESTÃ…, or a Bunnings kitchen, you don't need to measure each door. Our standard range uses the same measurements and drilling as those systems, so you order by the cabinet size in your plan.
The size in the product name is the cabinet size, not the exact door size. The door itself is typically 3 mm smaller each way:
- A METOD door named 60 × 80 is 597 mm wide and 797 mm high.
- A 600 mm Bunnings cabinet door is 597 × 717 mm.
So if you measure an existing IKEA door and get 597 mm, that is a 60 cm door. Browse by size in our kitchen doors, drawer fronts and panels.
Custom sizes: measure in full millimetres, and don't round
For any other cabinet, each piece is made to the size you enter, so the numbers have to be exact:
- Measure in whole millimetres. Write 597 mm as 597, not 600. Cabinet door sizes are very precise.
- Width first, then height, for every door and drawer front.
Replacing existing doors
Take each door or drawer front you are replacing and measure its back, edge to edge, width and height. Note the exact figure for each one.
New fronts for a cabinet with no doors
Measure to the outside of the cabinet frame and take 3 mm off each dimension. A door or drawer front is typically 3 mm shy of the cabinet's width and height:
- A 600 × 800 mm cabinet takes a 597 × 797 mm door.
- The same cabinet with two drawers takes two drawer fronts of 597 × 397 mm.
L-shaped corner doors
Order a corner door as two separate doors, without hinges and undrilled. Corner doors are only available that way.
Decide on hinges as you measure
Each custom door is ordered either with hinges and drilling, or without. With hinges, we supply soft-close Blum hinges and drill the doors, for $30 per item. Without, your installer drills them on site to suit the hinges you are using. Drawer fronts are only available undrilled. Our hinges guide covers the details.
Panels and fillers
Cover panels and fillers are where walls and floors that aren't square show up. Our standard METOD cover panels are made larger than IKEA's so your installer can trim them on site to the real wall.
Before you press order
- Download the measuring guide and the installation guide (both PDFs) from our custom size page and work through them.
- Measure everything twice.
- Custom pieces are made to your specification and can't be returned or refunded, so check the list against the kitchen once more before ordering.
